Words are a Flowin’

It’s been a long time since I could say with any honesty that I’m making progress with some writing, but finally I’ve been getting some words down this week. Once again, I have my writing group, The Naughty Ninjas to thank for my word count. They helped me kick off the writer’s block blues with my contribution to our story about synchronised swimmer Stephen, and his experiences in his one-sided thong at the after-olympics party… If you want to read about Stephen you have to sign up to the ninja’s newsletter. You can do that here.
I’m working on something called Butterfly House Book 1. I’ve had feedback from my editor at Escape Publishing and she’s told me to kill a darling, and develop a bit more of the ‘romance’… so I’m working on that. On the whole, she likes the idea of the Butterfly House book(s) and that’s something. Because this story is a bit odd-ball 🙂
So that’s the good news.

Something else that works for me when I’m a bit blocked, is to read, and I’ve been doing a fair bit of that.

I read across a lot of genres and this week I think I’ve covered a fairly good gamut. First up, I finished the third book in Jenn J McLeod’s ‘Season’s’ trilogy, Season of Shadow and Light. I enjoyed this a whole heap. I’ve had it on Kindle for quite some time and Jenn’s new book, The Other Side Of The Season is out now so I felt a pressure to get book 3 read before I ordered book 4.51nfpZe24sL._AC_US160_
Tick to me!
Here’s my review of Season Of Shadow and Light.

After that, I got sidetracked thanks to one of my Naughty Ninja buddies, Roz Groves. I fell into the rabbit hole that is Sacrificed To The Dragon. Well, beam me up Scotty – this is paranormal erotic fantasy set in the modern-day UK, in a period when dragon-shifters are recognised by the UK Government and have their own clans and territories – although not everyone is happy to have dragon-shifters in Old Blighty.
I liked this a lot. A lot. Ok. I liked this more than is probably good for me.518ZJjYFa2L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

Which leads me to my literary quota for the week. I made myself a new years’ resolution to get more ‘literary’ this year and I’ve been making good use of Amazon deals when something I’ve dubbed suitably ‘literary’ has cropped up.

The Eye Of The Sheep by Sofie Laguna is one of these. I started the first three pages before work this morning and oh my holy heck, I am going to have to concentrate to get a good sense of what is going on. This book won the Miles Franklin award for 2015.

So this weekend it should be edits, edits, and some new words on Butterfly… and we’ll see how we go from there.

Are you reading anything interesting?

A Very Ninja Christmas – Come Join The Fun

save the date

It’s the Squid that got your attention isn’t it? Tell the truth. I won’t judge! Who could resist the thought of Christmas with squid!

Yes! There will be tentacles as part of our Naughty Ninja Christmas Party on Facebook on November 25.

If you don’t know about the naughty ninjas, you can visit us here… I’m Lily ‘Beanie Queen’ Malone and I’m part of the ninja madness.

In true ninja fashion we intend to do Christmas very naughty, and all kinds of wrong. We’re sneaking up on Christmas in November, because being sneaky is what ninjas do!

To join us, please visit our Facebook page on this link and click “going” and you’ll then get great reminders nearer the day.

I’ll also tell you what my special ninja prize will be for the day, and all about my competition for the party.
HINT: It involves very naughty and inappropriate Christmas carols!

Procrastination: I’ve hit new heights (or lows)

I won’t be the first writer to wail about procrastination, nor will I be the last… but my procrastination just hit new heights.

I had every good intention of writing for an hour or so this afternoon, as Son Number 1 is at AusKick with his father, and Son Number 2 was quite happily watching a movie after playing with a friend for most of the afternoon.

I fooled myself with the obligatory: before I sit down with the laptop I’ll just check Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads and Amazon, oh, and my email. Twitter for me currently involves checking 4 sites that I take care of; and Amazon means (of course) US and AUS. Then I decided to update Goodreads with the new book I started this morning, ‘Mark of the Dragon Queen’ by Katie W. Stewart.

Then I discovered a bright glittery new logo on Facebook made by our own Jennie Jones to do with Hearts N Wined – the West Australian author and reader group that I’m part of. Jennie has made a gorgeous logo for HnW that I could upload to my page… so I did… and you can see it if you visit the ‘About Lily’ section of this site. Oh stuff that – you can see it if you look right here!!

Then, I learned that another group I’m part of, the very cool and wonderful, www.naughtyninjas.net are planning a mad nudie-streak at the upcoming Romance Writers of Australia Conference… so I had to have a bit of fun tweeting about that.

Then I thought about dinner for a while, but decided it was too early to cook dinner yet, and I really *should* get out the laptop. So out came the laptop. I opened it.  Turned it on. And then thought: I will sweep out the carport.

Because, I mean – that job hasn’t been done in 18 months since we’ve been living in our rental house, and so NOW is the perfect time to sweep it out? Yes?

See. It’s sad isn’t it.

Then, once said sweeping was finished, I had to blog about it.

Which means today’s wordcount… is ZERO! But the carport is very clean. And I do intend to do some writing tonight!

*Sigh*

And now it’s time to cook dinner.

Meet the Naughty Ninjas and win $80 Amazon gift card

Ninjas“We’re six naughty authors…With sneaky ninja powers… (Chuck Norris can deny paternity all he wants, but our mad ninja skills speak for themselves.)

“We’ve started a website…and we’re on a mission to bring you the lurrrve…”

This week the six authors involved in naughtyninjas.net harness the huskies to that big ol’ husky sled and start skiing (or is that sledding?) The ninjas are Rhyll ‘The Lady‘ Biest; Georgina ‘Glitterpants‘ Penney; Sandra ‘CookieFace‘ Antonelli; Andra ‘The Madame‘ Ashe; Cate ‘The Man Eater‘ Ellink; and yours truly, Lily ‘Beanie Queen‘ Malone.

There is so much stuff to check out at www.naughtyninjas.net it spins my mind. (It does not take much to spin my mind, however). If it’s naughty, the ninjas have thunk it. Or if they haven’t yet thunk it, they’re thinking about thunking it.

And there are launch prizes! You can win an $80 Amazon gift card by signing up for our newsletter (ninja

This is a merkin hand-made by Cate Ellink. Trust me, you do not want to win it.

What’s a merkin – I hear you ask? Here is a picture of one knitted by my sista-ninja Cate ‘The Man Eater’ Ellink. If you still can’t work out what it’s for then I direct you to Cate’s blog… Trust me when I say, you’d rather win the gift card than the merkin… 😉

Can I say publicly here too – thank you to the ninja-sistas who did so much work to build our ninja web-sled. Rhyll ‘The Lady’ Biest, and Georgina ‘Glitterpants’ Penney – you guys have true Turtle Power! and you rock! Thanks so much!

We look forward to having a lot of fun. There’s so much to get involved with at the website. You can join us on Twitter using #ninjadiscostick and #ninjapearl and #ninjaladyboner and there are prizes all along the way. You can learn about our books; our craft; the books we love (and hate) to read; and there’s even food and wine tips. (I happen to be our resident wine critic because I drink know the most when it comes to wine)…

Lily Gets Her Ninja On

How many times can a girl be called “Lovely Lily” before she explodes? Lord knows I’ve tried to convince the universe that I have a mean streak three miles long, but the universe refuses to listen. So now I have proof. Absolute proof. Proof thrice over.

  1. Lily %22Beanie Queen%22 Malone copyAccording to the Zimbio Star Wars personality quiz, I am DARTH VADER!!! (Nasty bastard!)
  2. According to this video here, I have a killer high kick, and you don’t wanna mess with me! (Ninja mum!)
  3. And, according to the contract I signed in the disappearing juice of a lemon, I am also Lily “Beanie Queen” Malone, she of the Naughty Ninjas. (Look! I even have my own ICON. Doesn’t it look nasty! Bwhahahahahaaaa.) No. It’s not pink. It’s puce-coloured.

So who are the Naughty Ninjas?
I am SOOO glad you asked! Let me read you our marketing blurb so you can start quaking:

“We’re six mean, lean, silent and deadly… cupcakes. Romantic, fluffy cupcakes who write stuff designed to give you all the feels.”

“WHAT! Noooooooooo. Damn you universe!” *Shakes Fist At Universe*

Reads on: “We write about lurv and naughty goings on, and people should go find our books and read them because our mums all say they are AWESOME.”

*Shakes First At Universe Some More*

Reads on: “We decided to see what would happen if all six author brains pulled together in a tandem effort, like a team of eager but easily distracted huskies tied to a giant, mutant sled.”

“Ooh… Huskies, hey? I love huskies, and I always wanted to go sledding… all that lovely white snow…”
